What is a Christian?

A Christian is a follower of Jesus

The definition of a Christian is one who professes a belief in and is a follower of Jesus. Specifically a Christian believes that: Jesus is the Christ (anointed one); the son of God; was born from a virgin; lived a sinless life; and died on a cross for the remission of the sins of mankind.

This the essence of Christianity. While that is the simple version, there is much more. Because man is involved in the interpretation of just about everything and because all men disagree with each other on just about everything, you must do your own homework and study the Word of God (the Bible) for yourself. However, in the meantime, all a person has to do in order to become a Christian is to do exactly what the Philippian jailer was told to do by the Apostle Paul in Acts 16:25-31.

And he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved and your household.” —Acts 16:30-31

The very first step to take after becoming a Christian is to get involved with the right kind of church. That is where the problem lies. The Bible commands that we are to come out of the world.

Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship does righteousness have with unrighteousness? And what fellowship does light have with darkness? 15 And what agreement does Christ have with Bell (Satan)? Or what part does he have with an unbeliever? 16 And what mutual agreement does the temple of God have with idols? For you are the temple of the living God as God has said, “I will dwell in them and walk in them, and I will be their God ad they shall be my people. 17 Therefore, come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” —2 Corinthians 6:14-17

The problem with that is American Christianity is so wrapped up in the world that for the most part Christians are indistinguishable from the world. You many get the warm and fuzzies from your church but are you doing what Jesus said to do?

These signs will follow those that believe: In my name they will cast out devils; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them; they will lay hands on the sick and they will recover.” —Mark 16:17-18
